When I think about all the life lessons I’ve learned from singing in choirs for most of my life – not to mention the vocal and musical lessons! – my mind is kind of blown, honestly.

Lately, I’ve been pondering how choir is the perfect place to learn how to balance personal responsibility with a collective effort. Even though choir is certainly a collective effort, there is also a huge level of personal responsibility – even in large choirs! Every voice matters, which is both encouraging and sobering at the same time, I think. It takes a ton of self-awareness and humility to understand whether your musical, vocal, or artistic choices are enhancing the group effort, or detracting from it.

Remembering to do things like marking your score with personal reminders, practicing your music in between rehearsals at home, and listening intently to the other singers in the choir are small but really effective ways to exercise personal responsibility in your choir, so that you can contribute positively to a beautiful, meaningful artistic outcome!

I want to hear from you: what are some “life lessons” you’ve learned from singing in choirs, or playing in ensembles?

What Else Is New?

The month of May always feels so busy, doesn’t it?! Here’s some of what’s going on this month:

My birthday was yesterday (May 4)! I turned 40, which is an idea I’m admittedly still getting used to. I had a beautiful day celebrating another year of life, and am looking forward to the year ahead.

I’ll be singing at the Vibrato Bar, Boston’s only classical music karaoke night, on May 18! If you’re in any way local to the Boston or North Shore area, you should totally come and say hi, hang out, and even sing or play something yourself, if you want!

This summer, I’ll be spending a lot of time in the DC area, as my husband begins doctoral work through Catholic University. (The program is remote during the academic year, but on-site in June and July.) We’ve been busy with all the necessary arrangements, and are looking forward to this new adventure!

And of course, there are the usual church gigs, family events, and, of course, enjoying the spring weather that finally seems to be sticking around here in New England.

Happy Maycember to all!

Until next time,

Ellen

Subscribe now

Share Ellen Allen | Vibrant Vocal Artist
